Down with Safety

We were honored to welcome Dr. Ron Siemens to Down to Wrestle for two practices. A pediatric emergency room physician by training and the former Head of Pediatrics in Saskatchewan, Dr. Siemens now serves as the Medical Director of Simulation at the University of Prince Edward Island’s new medical college. What makes his visit even more special is that Dr. Siemens is not only a Huskie Wrestling alumnus but also a parent of a child with Down syndrome.

During his time with us, Dr. Siemens observed our practices to better understand our unique coaching techniques and offer valuable guidance to our coaching team. His insight was especially helpful regarding the importance of safety for athletes with Down syndrome, particularly when it comes to conditions such as atlantoaxial instability (AAI)—a spinal condition that affects the neck and is common in children with Down syndrome. His feedback has reinforced our commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment while promoting physical fitness and confidence.

We’re incredibly grateful to Dr. Siemens for taking the time to share his expertise with us and for his continued support as both a medical professional and a wrestling alumnus. His visit reminded us of the rich legacy of Huskie Wrestling and the importance of mentorship in creating opportunities for the next generation of wrestlers.
