Down with Patience
At its core, Down to Wrestle is about more than just wrestling or inclusion —it’s about movement, fitness, and making sure every child has a place to belong. While the sport itself provides a natural foundation of skills to work on, we recognize that traditional coaching models will not work in this environment. That’s why our program takes a unique approach, one that prioritizes flexibility, patience, and the understanding that sometimes, kids just need to run around.
Unlike conventional programs that rely on structured drills and demonstrations, Down to Wrestle ensures that coaching happens when—or even if—it’s needed. With a high coach-to-athlete ratio, we make sure instruction is provided at exactly the right moment for the child, rather than when it’s most convenient for the coaches. This adaptive style allows every participant to engage at their own pace, whether they’re learning a new technique or simply getting active in a way that works for them. Because at the end of the day, keeping kids moving is just as important as teaching them how to wrestle.
As co-founder Dan Olver puts it, “We know our practices are a success if these kids don’t want to leave.” And as Johann Reimer, co-found and son to a child with down syndrome says, “If all the kids did during the hour is keep their heart rate elevated, it’s better than any other program thatJoseph has been part of.”
That philosophy drives every session, and most days, we can proudly say that’s exactly what happens. Whether they’re rolling, running, laughing, or wrestling, these kids are gaining confidence, staying active, and having fun—and that’s what Down to Wrestle is really about.
